“Fred knew something was up the minute he stepped inside the house, but he forestalled Clemence by insisting they had dinner first, and talk later. He was tired after the long drive from Yorkshire. It would be so sweet never to have to come all this way to be met with the usual build-up of family problems … but that would be shirking his responsibilities, and Fred had never been one to do that.
