“Dylan had stuck close to her, telling her he wanted to make sure she stayed safe, but his expression and body were distant and disapproving, suggesting the more likely reason he stayed close was that he no longer trusted her and wanted to make sure she didn’t do something stupid like receive and hide another email from her brother. By quitting time, defeat had spread through Rachel’s limbs like a thick miasma, rendering her almost immobile.
After cleaning up and calling Peter to say good-night, she headed to the stairs, intending to go up to her bedroom, but the trek seemed impossible. How had her life come to this? She’d always obeyed the rules—never bucked the system. Had given and given and given of herself—letting go of her dreams to provide for her orphaned brother. Putting her own grief for the death of their parents on hold for so long the pain had long ago faded without commemoration. Working above and beyond what she needed to in order to pay for Jax’s legal fees.
