kfein says: I really liked this book. He is a wonderful writer. His descriptions, his story, his metaphors, his language and his characters are terrific. I wanted to read this because it is about my region, places I have been or could easily visit. It is a region that has a reputation even for us locals and so I was hesitant but Chabon's characters are so lovingly drawn and with such humor and feeling that you want to ride right along in the 1973 Toronado and chow down on the fried chicken. He ge...ts the Oakland urban vernacular down perfect. It is about people moving forward and back and the way plans never go the way you would like and saying "I'm sorry" are the hardest 2 words in the dictionary. I laughed at his descriptions such as about the guy who's "head was shaved clean as a porn star's testicle." Not something I would get from Julia Glass. But overall it reminded me of F. Scott Fitzgerald and "The Great Gatsby" especially the last line about the boats against the current borne ceaselessly into the past." Rhiana says: Telegraph Avenue was a major disappointment to me. I wanted to love it since I love Chabon overall, but I found this book tedious at best. I didn’t much care about the plot or the characters, and except for a few stand-out passages, it lacked the language I love so much with Chabon. The research he must have done for this book is staggering, and even at his most mediocre, Chabon is better than almost any author out there. A reader into the music scene would have a much better appreciation for this book, I am sure.MoreLessRead More Read Less
