“My own question rings through my mind on repeat. I look down at the phone in my hand, as if trying to decide if the conversation I had just ended was real or some sleep-deprived nightmare.
“Charity? What is going on? You’re scaring me.”
I look up, into my best friend’s concerned face. “Brandon’s been arrested. Well, maybe, arrested.”
“What!” She turns ghostly white. “What are you talking about? Who was that? On the phone?”
I explain the story as best I can, mostly just replaying Roger’s words.
“Holy shit,” Ashley says when I finish. She grabs the phone out of my hands and starts to frantically scour the internet, trying to find any trace of what happened. I sit back, in a partial state of shock, and stare at her blankly for a moment before snapping out of it.
“Charity, look,” she says. She thrusts the phone into my hands and I see she has a gossip site pulled up.
