That's a good bit of Lamour nonsense. The wagon could easily have been concealed, NOT because the owners would return to it, but because they had to proceed on foot to where they were going, and a wagon left in the open would certainly attract the unwelcome attention of Apaches who would then scout around for a week looking for tracks.

I hope the readers by now hav been long irritated by the 50-60 times that Connie's fear of the APaches is driving her to betrayal and criminality.

The rest of the story about the conditions of the mine, nearly a chapter are identical word for word to the other story. I'm expecting to read soon about the flat slabs of paving Stark makes so that he acn run easily in case the cone begins to collapse.
