“In the moonlight, I could just make out the upside-down numbers on the dashboard dials. The driver’s seat was above my head and the gear stick was pointing down not up. My face was squashed up against the taxi’s canvas ceiling. I didn’t dare move. Gertrude could have been balanced on the edge of a precipice for all I knew. It was safer to keep still. I was in shock, I was in pain, but I wanted to stay in that moment between before and after when nothing was required of me.
