“She’d received my letter explaining why I could no longer be her bridge partner but she was not content to leave it at that. She asked why the results from my gynaecologist had not been forwarded to her.
I said I’d contact him and see why there was such a delay. ‘Thankfully, all the tests were clear,’ I told her. ‘The treatment he recommended has been successful and the matter we discussed is now regulated.’ She has steely eyes. Does she suspect? How can she?
‘You’ve lost weight,’ she said. ‘Ha...ve you been dieting?’ ‘I’m so busy,’ I said. ‘Skipping lunch. Things will quieten down as soon as I settle in Spain. You must come and stay with us. A break in the sun is just what should be ordered for the doctor.’ She smiled politely at my attempt at humour and muttered something non-committal, moved her trolley aside to let me pass.
