Both hands gripped the worn, leather straps of his backpack as if they were suspenders. The old prospector chewed his whalebone pipe as he walked, and sent a thin stream of smoke trailing over one shoulder and up into the fresh morning air.
    “Just a sec,” I said to Paplov, and ran out to meet Mer at the twig gate to our yard.
