“Brooke Baxter West hung up the phone, snagged a tissue from her desk at the medical office where she had her practice, and dabbed at her eyes. Not now, she told herself. Tears would have to wait until later.
She checked her watch—10 a.m., time for rounds at the hospital, a task that always required her utmost attention and focus.
