“His steps slowed even though he told himself he was being an idiot. It could be anybody. Her grandmother calling to check on her or a friend from the city. She had a few who called her now and then, though she’d sadly told him life was racing on in the big city and she was already being forgotten. Maybe she wasn’t as forgotten as she thought.
But his gut told him it was the call she’d been waiting for. The urge to run—to get in his truck and drive away without knowing one way or another—was... strong, but if it was good news, she’d want to share it with him. If it wasn’t good news, she’d need a shoulder to lean on.
He could tell by the sound of her voice she was on the back deck, so he made his way over, trying not to disturb her.
