desley, about seven miles from Shrewsbury, in 1819. He was left an orphan at an early age and was adopted by a near relative. After passing some years at a school at Richmond in Surrey he attended classes at King's College, London. At twenty he received a direct appointment to India, and landed at Calcutta in the beginning of 1841. On arriving in India Edwardes was posted to the 1st Regiment Bengal Fusiliers, and was ordered to join his regiment at Kurnaul. He spent three profitable years at that station studying Hindustani and Persian. From Kurnaul his regiment was moved to Subathoo, where Edwardes wrote the ' Brahminee Bull's Letters in India to his Cousin John Bull in England.' The ability and freedom of speech displayed attracted great attention to them. And it was reading these letters which first interested Captain lioto fa Jifr J. Mayan. SIR HERBERT B. EDWARDES. He was wounded at the doubtful victory of Moodkee, and was in hospital when Ferozesha was fought, but he was sufficiently recovered to take part in the crowning victory of Sobraon, which closed the Sikh campaign.
