None of the jurors recognized the dead child, nor had they heard tell of a missing girl among their neighbors and relatives. When all was done, Lord Rannulf paid the commoners to take the child to their parish church. They agreed to do so after Bishop William assured them that she had the right to be buried in the hallowed ground of their churchyard.
