Jean Patrick Nkuba would run after his older brother Roger challenging him to races. His natural gift for running got him noticed and led to a scholarship so he could continue his schooling as he trained to represent Rwanda in the Olympics. But Jean Patrick soon found himself on the wrong side of the political line as a hated Tutsi and those who were his friends one day were suddenly enemies. Could he save himself and his dream? I've read a number of memoirs by survivors of the g
...enocide. This was the first fiction but it's so well written that it could be a memoir. Much of the story takes place prior to the genocide so it was interesting to see how the story would develop in light of what I knew would come. You know you've read a good book when you find yourself thinking that you'd like to meet the characters in real life. That's the way I feel about the main characters with this one.
vanessa says:
An incredible work of fiction about an Olympic hopeful runner during the Rwanda genocide. I cried during the tragic parts, and then I cried again when good things happened. This book depicts the horrific devastation of genocide, and of the senselessness of neighbor fighting neighbor. But, this book also chronicles the strength of genocide survivors, and just because of that, I will give this book 4 stars.
