“She helped her father from the coach and held his arm as they went inside while Audrey thanked and dismissed the driver. After leading her exhausted father to his room, Jocelyn made her way to the hall and removed her traveling veil. As she unfastened her cloak, the slightly perfumed fragrance of the pine boughs that had adorned Eleanor’s house rose to remind her again of Eleanor’s parting plea to join them in Virginia.
Jocelyn’s farewell to Eleanor had been bittersweet.
