““Hey,” said Dyamonde. “Why’d you run away from me the other day?” “Huh?” “Saturday. Me and my mom were coming out of Second Time Around, and I saw you coming out of the shelter.” Damaris looked around, nervously twisting a strand of hair. “No, I don’t think so,” she said. “Yes. I know it was you. You even turned around when I called your name. But then you ran away.” Damaris glanced up and down the hall to make sure no one else was close enough to hear. “Look,” she said in a whispery voice. “No...body knows where I live, so please don’t tell them. Please!” “Don’t worry,” Dyamonde whispered back. “It’ll be our se-cret.” Then she closed her mouth with an invisible zipper. After that, Damaris stopped looking so scared.
