“Nacho and Jorges were gone. But he was not alone. A six-foot rattlesnake lay coiled against his right side, its ugly, triangular-shaped head less than a foot from his own. An involuntary gasp brought a warning buzz from the disturbed reptile. A long sixty seconds followed, with the snake staring, unblinking, at Tyree, and Tyree staring back. He had seen a man die from a snake bite once. It had not been a pretty sight, the man’s leg swollen and turning black, his eyes wide with terror, the fever... that shook him from head to toe as the poison spread through his system, convulsions… Another minute slid quietly into eternity. Tyree’s shirt was soaked with sweat. Perspiration dripped into his eyes, but he dared not blink it away.
