“Hastily I jumped up and ran across to the window. The car parked at the roadside was Stephen’s.
I hurried downstairs. One thing was certain: if he had come, even though several hours late, to take me to Wies, he was out of luck. I couldn’t leave the house till Gunther returned from the police station. Stephen stood in the open doorway, relaxed and smiling.
‘Are you ready?’ he said quite pleasantly and calmly.
‘Am I ready?’ I exclaimed unbelievingly, hardly able to believe my ears at... his impertinence. ‘I’ve been ready since seven-thirty this morning. What happened?’ ‘You got my message last night?’ ‘Yes, but …’ ‘Then you’ll understand.
