“He stared back at her as he rhythmically touched the top of his blanket, completely unconcerned. She should never have left him this evening. Shudders pulsated as her thoughts wandered on what could have happened. But Cody was here.
Safe.
She didn’t take that gift of safety for granted for even an instant. This evening could have ended so horribly. She should be happy.
Relieved. But she was still so shell-shocked by Alex’s revelation and the hour of terror looking for her son that she could barely function. Nina let out a breath she didn’t realize had been locked in her chest.
She smoothed Cody’s hair and he let her touch him without flinching. “Please don’t wander off without telling me, okay? I know it’s difficult for you to talk, but this is important. I need to know where you are.”
“Want that collie puppy,” he whispered, and pulled a piece of paper from under his covers.
