My, oh my... This one sneaked up on me in a big way.I mean, there I was looking for something short and moderately engaging to have for a few weeks' evenings, so I picked this bad boy up and man... was I in for a surprise...First thing that should have given me a clue was the atmosphere, I guess. It was thick, dark, with smell of blood, gunpowder and mystery. I was not prepared for the depth of character such a short (by fantasy standards) novel could have. Then there were the
... characters. I must admit my affinity for gritty, seasoned characters with gruff voices, but as most archetypes they're usually not that easy to pull off cleanly. Suffice it to say - all such characters were pulled off brilliantly, even the minor ones having a level of depth to them not typical to this sort of novel (or the sort of novel I was expecting, but I digress). The story itself while all over the place, combining it's different plot lines - a veiled mystery plot, a heroic adventure plot, a political/military plot, as well as a dabble into the mysticism/religion of the world. Shockingly well balanced, I must say. I didn't find myself bored with any of them or waiting/hoping for a specific plot line or point of view to reappear (something that happens extremely often with most epic fantasies I've read, but I digress yet again) and in the mix of all that were action sequences that were just delicious and I would consume with a nice side dish and a good glass of wine. The only negative if you could call it that is the magic system that was extremely weird to the palate when I read the resume of the book itself... But trust me once you get to eating this mean piece of a novel it comes off organic and super sexy.Overall, rich engaging characters, a strange and interesting world that needs exploring, a plot that left me hungry for more, and an atmosphere that made me want to put on a monocle and get a dueling cane. Finished in a day and already halved the second book, for a five out of five on a book that exceeded every expectation I had of it.

This is one terrific fantasy story! It's great to read a story set in a fantasy world that has parallels to the Napoleonic era of the early 1800s. A world where magic can co-exist with such implements as gunpowder, flintlock rifles, and flintlock pistols. I also like the idea of powder mages, people who can snort gunpowder and use it to enhance their magical abilities. I also like the political intrigue, where a field marshal can overthrow a corrupt monarchy to help the common people survive. And throwing in the possibility of powerful wizards being able to summon a god? It all makes for one heck of a read, and I'm looking forward to "The Crimson Campaign," the next book in the Powder Mage trilogy.
