“In the barren yard, they looked like plague animals. During the war, Frank had seen starving dogs and starving people. One female hound, her ribs and spine prominent, had teats dragging to the ground. The dogs snarled rather than barked, and he wondered how the animals managed to stand upright they were so poor. He stood in the yard, the rain a physical force as it pelted him. His shoulders and face were numb from the stinging deluge.
