Empty boxes in hand, she headed into the backroom and tucked them in a corner. As she straightened, she caught a glance of herself in the beveled mirror that hung at a slant on the wall. After numerous attempts with Clairol, she’d settled on a dark raven color for her long straight hair. It complimented her ivory skin and softened the golden brown of her eyes. She’d ...bitten her nails to shreds when she’d first applied the color, certain it would be too dark for her pale features. But once her hair dried she’d appreciated the change. It felt good to be wrong once in awhile. At twenty-eight, things were coming together for her.
“You’re doing all right for yourself,” she assured her reflection. “You’re going to make it.”
She glimpsed down her ruby silk blouse and black A-line skirt. Somehow she’d managed to keep her nylons snag free, not an easy feat while tackling the rough edges of cardboard.MoreLess
