“Finally she heard a breathless “hello” at the other end of the line. Huddled in her kitchen, speaking in a whisper, Vanessa explained that Nick was lying in the middle of her living room floor, apparently immobilized. “What should I do?” she asked. “Call the paramedics?” Gina laughed. “It would serve him right if you did. Nick’s faking, Vanessa—he probably wants to spend the night.” Vanessa sighed. Of course Nick was pretending, indulging his hypochondria.
