“His back had been hurting constantly since the spring, and he was not able to throw his fastball with full force. Bouton was a power pitcher without a power pitcher’s body—too small by the usual standards to be a big-league fastball pitcher; in his own words, he was a Volkswagen at the Indianapolis 500. His fastball was, at best, in the low nineties, and if he lost anything on it, then he was immediately vulnerable. Here he was, in his second big season, after winning twenty-one games in 1963, and he was without his real strength, which meant increasingly that balls hit off him were home runs.
