“Most hikers chose to camp at the river and then walk for three hours to the parking lot pickup point at East Haggity the following day. This was where Howard would be meeting them at noon on Sunday. The trail up Haggity Mountain was narrow, winding and rocky, but clearly marked so easy to follow. Nevertheless Andy found herself spending a lot of time watching her feet rather than the scenery. Twisting an ankle on one of the many loose rocks wasn’t in her plans for the day. Fortunately her boots... were good ones and her soles maintained a good grip on the ground. At each new, higher plateau she paused to look around. The day had begun with the air clean, crisp and fresh-smelling, but as they climbed higher up the mountain Andy noticed a definite scent to the trees. “Eucalyptus!” she exclaimed. “That scent is eucalyptus! They’re not native. Who on earth would have planted eucalyptus way out here?” “It’s because they’re drought-resistant and evergreen,” explained Corey. This side of the mountain is a rain shadow zone so the park authorities planted eucalyptus here maybe ten, fifteen years ago to help stabilize the soil.”MoreLessRead More Read Less
