“On their way to the dockside that morning, the streets had been deserted, except for occasional seagulls, screaming and wheeling overhead, but now the city was coming to life. The shops weren’t open yet, and the workers hadn’t started their day, but there were plenty of people about, making deliveries and getting ready for the coming day. ‘That’ll be the Countess,’ said Mary Ann.
‘Not Countess Markievicz?’ said Amelia in disbelief. This woman used to be a friend of Mama’s when Mama protested for women’s suffrage, but look at her now, leading an armed gang.
