Mountain Mare (2005)
“Sheriff Ballard said. “Horses can travel some distance, but I figured her for a local mare, since she looked to be in fine shape—”
Sheriff Hector Ballard was one of Sam’s favorite people. With his droopy mustache and brown hair that needed trimming, he looked just like the small-town sheriff he was, but he used every spare minute to improve his skills and every spare penny for high-tech equipment. Besides that, he was a horseman.
Sam wasn’t a bit surprised he’d been thinking about the mare.
“—until I noticed she was a Rocky Mountain Horse.”
“A what?” Sam asked.
“’Course, I haven’t seen her in the flesh, but from the TV news, she looked to me like a Rocky Mountain Horse, just her coloring. You’ve seen her move around, Sam. Does she move like a gaited horse? Sort of an ambling way of going, but it looks real natural, not like she was schooled to it?”
“That’s it exactly,” Sam said.
The sheriff made a satisfied sound.
“Good chance, then, that she’s a Rocky.
