“They were coughing most of the night, you didn’t get much sleep. You lie and stare at the ceiling. It reminds you of being in Dorm. It is a Dormitory of course. But not like the ones you’re used to. The ceiling’s grey with dirt and the paint’s peeling off in big curved flakes. Dull fans of light shine across it from the windows. The windows are tall and round-topped and the lower panes have bars over them. You turn on your side. The sheets smell funny too. Sort of sour. The truck brough...t you a long way. You sat quietly for the most part, staring through the windows. There were hills and mountains, stretches of heather-covered moorland, once a great blue lake that went on for miles. Sometimes you passed through villages. They all seemed alike; shops, a church, lines of stone-built cottages. They didn’t look very welcoming.
