He lay on his stomach facing the window through which streamed bright rays of sunlight. He turned his head, knowing even as he did that the bed beside him would be empty. Touching the sheets he found them cold. She’d been gone for a while. Jared was a bit disappointed but not surprised.
    A glance at his watch told him it was almost nine o’clock. He hadn’t slept that late in ages. Jared rolled over, stretched, then swung his feet over the edge of the bed and sat up.

... a few minutes going through everything that had happened over the past few days. If someone had told him a week ago that he’d not only be guardian to four kids but also husband to his sister-in-law’s sister, he would have laughed himself silly. Thankfully he was pretty good at adapting to changing circumstances, to thinking on his feet.
    And last night had been a prime example of that. When he’d heard the soft knock on his door he’d assumed it was one of the kids.
