Marie Bashkirtseff (From Childhood to Girlhood)

Marie Bashkirtseff was born in 1858 in Russia. She was a sculptor, diarist, and painter. She grew up traveling across most of Europe with her mother. While in France she studied painting at the Académie Julian, which was one of the few places that would accept female students. Her most famous works were the portrait of Paris slum children titled The Meeting and In the Studio. Most of her work was destroyed by the Nazis. Marie died of tuberculosis at age 25.
