“Stop fussing over me.” Ryan leaned against the headboard of the only bed in the two-room log cabin. After the noon meal, Bertie had applied fresh bandages on his head and upper arm, then bustled out of the room, leaving Emma alone with her injured brother.

Clothes were strewn over the end of the bed, heaped on the floor, and draped across the chests, all of it making the place feel even smaller.
