“They both lay motionless, eyes closed. To someone else, they might look like they slept but she could feel that they weren't there. Not their souls anyway. Oh sure, their lungs breathed, their hearts beat, but no one was home in those shells. She wasn't exactly certain why she knew it as strongly as she did but as certainly as she knew anything, she was sure about this.
