I swear the damn thing weighed fifty pounds.” I supposed that the weight of impending death could be quite heavy, but I was glad that Levi was free of that burden. “You know, I still want to pay if you’ll let me. I’d been right about the hazard pay. It wa...s going to take me a year to recover the money I’d paid Kaii, though I didn’t want Levi to know that. “It goes beyond history,” I said simply. “I told you, I help my friends when they’re in trouble.”

“But nothing. Just drop it, okay? It’s over and you’re not going to die anytime soon. Got it?”
“Yeah, yeah,” Levi said as he began to sweep up a pile of broken glass. “So . . . are you still leaving town?”
