“The captains all had experience on horses and, with the animals that had been left in the fort by the soldiers, there was enough to provide one horse for each volunteer. Lorik and Stone began immediately training the volunteers to ride and care for the horses. They checked hooves, legs, withers, and backs. They practiced saddling and unsaddling, feeding and rubbing down the animals. Lorik stressed that there were no more animals to be had, so if something happened to one of the horses it meant ...that one of the volunteers was walking.It was turning into a long day. Rain fell off and on, and the wind was cold. By late afternoon Lorik was exhausted and hungry. He was on his way back to the fort to check on Constable Yorn and to see how things in the fort were coming along when a cry went up from the big lookout tower. Then a horn sounded. Lorik had been walking his tired horse across the muddy field, but with all the commotion at the fort he decided to get back as quickly as possible.
