The idea of her family feeling sorry for her made her stomach tight. She had become used to feeling small and yet, with her engagement to Lord Fenton, she was at the top—finally. Alice reminded herself that she did not know Lord Fenton’s mind nor had she ever seen an engagement up close enough to know if anything were truly out of place. But her attempts at justification never quite eliminated her unease.
