Penny loudly cries out in the car. I can barely hear her anyway due to the ringing in my ears from the noise inside the venue.

The flashing lights of the passing cars draw my attention. I don’t want to lie to my best friend, but I know that I can’t tell her the truth either. “I lost track of time while I was out and about. I told you that I could entertain myself and I did.”
“Who were you with?”
“Huh?”
She turns halfway in her seat to look at me. “You heard me. Who were you with? Travis and I saw your head in the restaurant this morning while you were laughing about something and we saw someone sitting with you.
