I never saw him on television, so in some sense he didn’t really exist for me, and while I was vaguely aware of him as a recording artist, I didn’t think much of him. He was just another one of those guys who sang, and besides “Hound Dog” and “Jailhouse Rock,” it really wasn’t the kind of music that I was interested in. It was crooning, and it was too smooth. So when Elvis appeared on Ed Sullivan, wriggling his pelvis, it wasn’t a major turning point for me. But then in 1964, my mother and I we...re sitting around one Sunday night, in the middle of our usual ritual: dinner and Ed Sullivan. I was eating homemade hamburgers that my mother used to make, and peas. I wasn’t a fan of most vegetables, but I didn’t mind peas, so she must have just loaded me up with them whenever she could. So there I was, with the hamburger, the peas, and Ed Sullivan, and Sullivan started saying, “Ladies and gentlemen, tonight on our show, we have the Beatles.”
I didn’t know what he was talking about.
