This book was such a fabulous read. High adventure, intelligent, amusing, cynical, philosophical and thoughtful. And bloody gory too. Being with Jorg is a rousing and thrilling experience. He is all too human with his many flaws and prejudices, and such a cunning young man with so many tricks up his sleeves. And the supporting cast are remarkable too. A brilliant and rewarding read. On to the next book!

I enjoyed this book immensely, reading it in two or three sitting
...s in a single day. A middle-of-the-series book has unique tasks. The KoT fulfilled the promises made by the first novel of the series, as well as making and delivering on its own promises, as well. I gave this story 5/5 for fully delivering a compelling and entertaining story as both a novel and a part of a broader series. The novel remained consistent with everything already established. This is not to say that there was not change, development, and surprise in the plots established in the first book. There was. But wherever the story turned, the author provided plausible and compelling reasons. I was surprised many times - but never ambushed or suckered. Inconsistency is something I detest, and this second book delivered not only consistency with the first book, but pleasurable harmony and contrast, as well. The book accomplished its "second novel" tasks and did so in a way that allows it to stand alone far better than many other mid-series books out there. The novel delivered on the hopes of a reader for a mid-series book: it took me further into the world, deeper into the characters, and higher in its stakes. It provided me surprising reveals into the nature of things in general and things that had come before, as well. The author fulfilled the common (but challenging) reader desire for the protagonist to change, but only in a "good" way - meaning only in ways that enrich the story and entertain. The character did grow and change - but he continued to surprise and delight. His changes were realistic, self-consistent, and organic. No cardboard cutouts here. The moral component of the story and the moral compass of the protagonist - popular topics for discussion with this series - continued to be important lenses through which the narrative is viewed. And that view managed to remain consistent with the story/protag's past, while dynamically adapting to an interesting series of developments and epiphanies. I encourage those who reacted strongly to the protagonist's moral shortcomings in the first book to stick with him to understand both his shortcomings' roots and his.The author's use of parallel plots lines offset by time was effective and interesting. I think this technique was the primary component in this series' full exploitation of the First Person POV's strengths, while also overcoming its weaknesses and insulating the story from its limitations. I have not yet seen another author deliver a fantasy of this breadth and depth through the constraints of a single character's point of view so well as Mr. Lawrence. In addition to presenting sophisticated, parallel plots, the plots run deep, as well, circling back on themselves and carrying the reader everywhere they might wish, at just the right moment. I'll conclude by tipping my hat to the author's disciplined presentation of the world's reality in entertaining, surprising, and delightful sequence, timed and tuned to entertain. I spent an entire day reading this book almost without pause, and I never got bored. My eyes tired, but I did not - because he presented a rich world, populated by interesting characters who experience dramatic and interesting events. I look forward to my next visit.MoreLess
