Chris shouted at his mother.
Birdie sat at the kitchen table and gently massaged her temples. “I was a little crazy,” she said. “I’m not now.”
“You’ve had my children locked up!” he yelled. “What were you thinking?”
“Relax, Christopher. They’re in Tom Toopeek’s police station. It’s not the federal penitentiary.”
“It’s jail!”
“They stole seventy dollars from me, Chris. I heard them sneak in the house and prowl around, whispering and searching for it. Aren’t you even a little worried about where
...this is all leading?”
“I’ll give you the goddamn seventy dollars!”
Her hand came out like a shot and slapped his face. The minute she’d done it, she wished to recall the act, but it was too late. It was like he was fourteen himself, and she wouldn’t take that kind of talk from him. And how dare he defend thieves. How dare he try to make this her fault.
He stared daggers at her, his cheek reddening, then he turned and stomped out of the house.
Where have I gone wrong?
