The fire's glow could not hide the pale, icy mask that held her features rigid. "I had no suspicions, no expectations..., until I arrived here." "And you spoke to me." "And you spoke to me," he reminded her. Colin took a sip of his wine. He had only told the story a few times in his life. The Cunningtons hadn't believed him when he was eight. That kept him silent until he was twelve, when he shared the story with Jack Quincy. Later he told Mrs. Remington. More recently he had disclosed it to Aubrey Jones.
It wasn't that the telling was particularly difficult that made him reluctant to repeat it. It was so long ago that when Colin thought about it now he could almost believe it had happened to someone else.
