This is a must read to anyone who is a writer, an artist, or just a huge Jim Henson fan. It was humble, creative, and a huge insight to the master behind the Muppets, Sesame Street, Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. It was a biography that did not have any scandal, heart-break, but was just wholesome and welcoming. It had everything that made Sesame Street and the Muppets great. Though, I did want to know a lot more about the creative process and the creativity that went into most o
...f Henson's work. It did drag a bit on about his childhood and the family history of the Henson's. I really expected it to be a lot like the Pixar book, 'Creativity Inc.' How it did touch briefly on the biography side of Pixar and the big names behind it, but also delved into the creative process and writing behind some of its movies. I wanted this to be a lot like that, maybe if it touched on a bit more on the writing and process of most of Henson's work, I would have given it 5/5. Overall, a pleasant read and a must to any Muppets fan.

I was all set to give this biography five stars, but then I read a few other reviews and had to agree with some of the negatives. The author paints Henson as an amazing man with out-of-this-world talent. And that's all true. But he completely minimalizes the mistakes he made. Learning that Jim put work before his wife, if not his children, made me lose a little respect. His multiple extramarital affairs were glossed over with positive comments about how he needed someone that would provide him with certain things. Since his wife wasn't that person it was okay that he looked for it elsewhere. That said, I loved learning about the history of iconic characters and projects that Jim Henson created, influenced, or merely touched. Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Gonzo, Bert and Ernie, Big Bird, Cookie Monster, Oscar the Grouch, Yoda, The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, The Witches, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Reading this memoir has interested me in watching the old Muppet TV shows and movies and it makes me quite interested in the upcoming ABC sitcom.

This is my favorite book. I almost cannot express how much I've fallen in love with Jim Henson, his family, his friends, his company, and the work that they have all done. As someone who watched Sesame Street as a child but never really had any further connection with Jim Henson than a few Muppet movies, you do not have to know Jim Henson's work all that well to fall in love with his outlook on life and appreciate the fact that he touched all of TV then, and still continues to affect TV now. I would recommend this book to everyone, as everyone has something to gain from it, whether it be knowledge of the creative process, an outlook of how to live your life, or how to manage a company (what not to do, too) and treat your employees. What a wonderful, wonderful read. Thank you to Brian Jay Jones for writing this.
