“Imperium in Imperio” is the best known work by Sutton Elbert Griggs (1872-1933), an African American author, Baptist minister, and social activist. This utopian novel tells of the revelation of an African American "empire within an empire," a shadow government complete with a Congress based in Waco, Texas. While sympathetic with this frustration and desire for autonomy, Griggs warns against self-serving political leaders whose quest for personal power guarantees the failure of the community's efforts.
