“The house is huge – bigger than anything I have ever seen.Everything is very formal here. We are invited to leave our wraps in a beautiful room downstairs and then a footman precedes us up the stairs and announces us with great formality:‘The Reverend George Austen, Mrs Austen, Miss Austen, Miss Jane Austen, Miss Cooper, Mr Henry Austen and Mr Frank Austen.’The earl and his lady are very grand and they bow ceremoniously to us.
