On Thirty-ninth and Drexel Avenue, on the South Side of Chicago, at S & L Beverages—his father’s ill-fated soda pop factory that went out of business not long after the beginning of World War II when sugar became scarce—my dad helped to manage the factory’s accounts and spent his spare time proposing new label designs.
