“Are you sure it’s working?” The voice was faint, as though rising up a very deep well, and it seemed to be her own. Or perhaps Clair One’s. Before she could pursue that mystery, the dream within a dream slipped out of her grasp and her eyelids flickered open. What had happened? She saw only darkness. She smelled gunfire and blood. People were crying and moaning all around her. The floor was hard against her back. Something blazed bright and terrible in her shoulder and chest when she tried and ...failed to sit up.
