man of many peculiarities, an able Latinist, and his grammar for many years was widely used as a text-book in colleges and high schools in the Middle and New England States. It was the first full and authentic sketch of this distinguished scholar and teacher that has been published, presenting many facts concerning his career that have never been made public heretofore. Dr. Dubbs' paper was followed by a short paper by the Secretary, accompanying two letters written by James Buchanan In 1839 and 1840 never before made public, relating to several prominent citizens of this county, one addressed to General Jackson and the other to Governor David R. Porter. The letters were accompanied by biographical sketches of the persons referred to therein. The thanks of the Society were extended to the authors of these papers, and they were ordered to be printed in the usual way. The question of moving the quarters of the Society to the Herr Smith Library Building, on North Duke street, was brought up, and the Society, by a vote, decided that a committee should be named to conclude the contract offered by the Trustees of the said Library. Dr. Dubbs made an earnest plea to the members present to undertake the preparation of papers to be read at the meetings, and several of thosepresent volunteered to do so during the coming winter.
