“Once he was well and truly gone, she set Sophia on the couch beside her and stood.
For a moment she swayed, her head fuzzy and pounding against her temples. She’d be glad when the painkillers kicked in.
Sophia leaped off the couch and circled Rachel’s feet, nervous, probably afraid Rachel would leave her, as well.
Pushing through the fog of dizziness, Rachel hurried toward her bedroom, grabbed clean panties and a bra from her drawer and a shirt and jeans from her closet. She wanted to take a shower before Noah returned, afraid if she had one while he was there, she’d lose all sense of modesty and pride and beg him to join her.
She switched on the water and stripped off her soiled clothing while she waited for the water to warm. Sophia settled on the bath mat, curled into a ball and laid her head on her paws, watching Rachel out of one cracked eyelid.
“Afraid I’ll leave you?”
