“‘I know, Mam. I’m not meeting Laura until six.’ Bethan finished her tea and opened the cupboard set into the alcove between the range and tiny square of window that looked out on to the walled in back yard. She took her toothbrush from the cracked coronation mug that held all the family’s brushes, and went into the washhouse.
