An angry glint clung to his dark eyes. Tired and slightly frustrated, he struggled to maintain composure.
“What’s this?” he demanded once they stopped.
Two crewmen stood over a young boy of less than twenty. He was disgustingly filthy. His clothes were ragged and torn in more places than decent folk found acceptable. He smelled of filth and urine. His hair was unkempt, giving him a generously devious appearance. Bahr sighed. He was thankful there was no serious emergency to contend with

The sailor on the left, sword drawn and pointed menacingly at the boy, leaned forward and said, “We found him hiding down in the stores with the rats.”
Bahr was more worried over the lad’s choice of ships to stowaway on than the fact that he had committed a crime. Looking down at the bedraggled boy he suddenly felt sympathy. Twenty years ago he wouldn’t have had any problems with throwing the lad overboard and sailing on.
