The familiar desert terrain surrounded by bare grey mountains was no more: now all that could be seen in every direction was a limitless expanse of ochre desert.       The physical feeling of vulnerability, the idea that at any second some unforeseen calamity might overcome them, was matched by a similar psychological fear. Back at the castle, with the weight of the council behind her, she had been sure of her place in the scheme of things: at the very top, thanks to her lineage. What she had suggested to the council had, in time, always been acted upon; she had had a quiet hold on power, the knowledge that she was respected, if not for the changes she had made, then for the fact that she was her father’s daughter.
