“Gage said to Max over coffee at the sheriff’s office. The sun was barely above the horizon, but some things couldn’t wait on the business day. One of them was coffee. “I was surprised to find you here already,” Max remarked. “I gotta get here before Velma. It’s the only way I can make sure my first coffee of the day isn’t toxic mud.” Max smiled faintly. “She’s a dragon.” “A good dragon.” Gage sighed and motioned to the burn scars on his face. “You know what happened?” Max shook his head. “Car bomb. I made a mistake. I never thought the drug dealers would figure out where I lived. But they did, somehow, and they tried to get me. They got my first wife and kids instead.” Max swore. “How do you live with that?” “Like I said, it isn’t easy. I knew a cop from Arizona, I think it was. He went under for eight years. So deep that only one other cop knew who he was. He was so damn good at it that he got arrested regularly, and beaten up by the cops more than once.
